Maya, soaked from head to toe, isn’t the only victim: a frightened hen, wings spread wide, is running in a desperate attempt to take off and escape the surrounding chaos.
She barely leaves the ground, flapping her wings with all the energy of despair, before landing heavily in a cloud of feathers.
Raoul watches the scene with a mix of sympathy and silent solidarity. He hasn’t managed to fly very high today either.
To be continued…

But that is exactly the moment he stops looking where he’s going. His foot catches on a garden hose, left lying there since last weekend, all tangled up. Raoul literally takes off.
He has only had time for one silent « hooray » to savor his little victory with Maya before a long glide through the air ends with a dull thud, followed by an awkward silence.
Maya stops laughing at once. Well… almost. It’s when Raoul lifts his head that he notices what his fall has just set off.

They run and run, without stopping, hearts pounding at the thought that the teacher might appear behind them at any moment.
They duck into the garden of the house next door. Raoul turns his head toward Maya, expecting a frown or even a telling-off.
But no, to his pleasant surprise, she gives him a sly half-smile, as if the broken window had become their little secret.
Bonnie and Clyde, playground edition. And in his head, a single word explodes:
« Hooray! »

The ball, thrown with far more enthusiasm than accuracy, flies straight toward the school and smashes a pane in one of its French windows, with a crash of glass that bodes nothing good.

Saving a cat is good. Playing with it would be even better.
He looks around and spots a tennis ball lying in the garden. He picks it up and throws it as hard as he can, with a grand heroic flourish.
« Go on, little cat! Go fetch the ball! »
Raoul feels the shame of « you smell like a goat » fading a little. At last, he’s making a good impression on Maya.
Boosted by this small surge of confidence, Raoul figures that since the « rescue » plan worked, he might as well move straight on to the « animal lover, expert level » plan.

The next day, in the garden near the school, a little cat is wandering about, clearly lost. Raoul watches it for a moment... and then he spots Maya, out for a walk.
A new idea comes to him.
He walks up to the cat and calls out, loud enough for Maya to hear:
« Are you lost, little cat?... Don’t be scared, I’m going to save you! »
Then, more quietly, leaning down toward the animal, he adds in a confidential tone:
« Play along, and I’ll slip you a chocolate marshmallow mouse. »
Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Maya watching him, pleasantly surprised for once. No suspicious bouquet, no botched roar, and no more nasty smell.

In the silence of his bedroom, Raoul decides to try one last desperate measure. Sitting cross-legged, his bedtime cuddly toy in his hands,
he squeezes his eyes shut and whispers:
« Spirit of the Bedtime
Cuddly Toy... please make it so that tomorrow, I don’t smell like a goat anymore. »
He waits a moment, as if
an answer might drop from the ceiling. Nothing comes, of course. But exhaustion finally gets the better of him, and Raoul at last falls asleep, his bedtime cuddly toy still nestled in his hands.

That night, sleep just won’t come. No matter how many sheep Raoul counts, the way he’s always been taught, nothing works!
So, to keep his mind busy, he swaps the sheep for rams in his head, but that’s even worse: they’re all in cahoots with Maya:
« One... you stink like a goat, two... you still stink like a goat, three... you STILL stink like a goat... »
This goat smell just won’t leave him alone.

Raoul, caught off guard, is still searching for a reply when she adds, already walking away with a mocking smile:
« But you do smell like a goat. »
The words hit home harder than any cutting comeback could have. Raoul is left standing there, a fallen ogre, in a green costume that suddenly looks far less impressive.

Silence.
Maya turns around slowly. She’s in costume too that day, as a princess, with a golden crown and a sparkling dress. She looks Raoul up and down, not the least bit impressed.
« Not scared, » she says simply…

The next day, Raoul keeps a lower profile. No more big ideas or complicated plans.
But a few days go by, and it’s Carnival Day. As they do every year, all the children gather in the village square. They’re all dressed up as fantastical characters. It’s the most eagerly awaited afternoon of late winter.
Raoul, true to form, hasn’t picked his costume at random.
This year, he’ll be... an ogre.
A real one, a big one, a green one. (Any resemblance to a famous swamp dweller is, of course, purely coincidental.)
Still a little sore about the bouquet episode, Raoul thinks this might be his chance to make up for it.
And there’s Maya, just a little way off, dressed as a princess.
An idea springs to mind at once. No flowers this time, no gift, just a joke to get noticed. He creeps up behind her as quietly as he can, and all of a sudden, he leaps out, arms outstretched, letting out a terrifying ogre growl.
« GRRRAAAOOO! »

Bouquet in hand (well, « bouquet » is a bit of a stretch), Raoul strides off toward Maya with great panache. No doubt about it, he’s going to blow her away. When he finally reaches her,
he proudly holds out his flowers, all smiles, as if he’d just pulled off a great feat.
« Welcome to the neighborhood!
Here, these are for you.
I picked them myself. »
Except that with Raoul, theory and practice rarely go hand in hand. The wreath doesn’t quite have the intended effect.
One slap later, cheek red and pride in pieces, Raoul finally understands his mistake.
« How was I supposed to know they came from a cemetery… » he stammers.

Very surprised, he follows the column all the way back to try to work out what’s going on, and makes another discovery a little further on. This time, the ants are carrying Aunt Hortense’s cactus, it too like a trophy of their victory.
It was the cactus Raoul had been keeping as a backup plan, to give his new neighbor as a welcome gift.
« Oh well, » he sighs. « I know where to find much prettier flowers ».

While looking for flowers in the garden, Raoul comes across a column of ants, disciplined and methodical, crossing the path in single file. He crouches down, sets down the jar with his relic, and studies them closely for a few minutes.
« Right, it’s official: this is a miniature invasion, » he thinks, impressed.
But his admiration is short-lived. He realizes with horror that the ants are carrying off Granny’s dentures, HIS relic, to who knows where…

« So Raoul sets off on a quest, searching his house from top to bottom. The living room drawers, the sideboard in the hallway, the dusty shelves in the attic.
Oh, a vase!? Hmm… too ordinary. An old medal found in a biscuit tin? A bouquet of dried flowers… very dried, too dried in fact! A seashell where you can hear the sea, in which a spider has spun its web, old photos yellowed with age… Nothing seems quite extraordinary enough.
And then, at the very bottom of a cardboard box, he comes across THE treasure!
A jar, carefully kept for decades. Inside, a prehistoric relic! Granny’s dentures.
They were what allowed her to keep biting into apples, even well past ninety-seven. He rushes downstairs, examining them, turning them over and over… But once in the garden, he has to face the facts: this isn’t the kind of gift you give a girl you’ve just met. Back to square one.
He sets the jar down in the grass and walks on through the garden, telling himself that flowers might be a good compromise after all, but he comes upon a completely different sight… »

And then the idea came to him, as clear as day: an apple pie! He’d bake her a welcome pie!
How could she possibly resist that?
Off to the kitchen. Raoul pulls out everything he can find. He’s watched his grandmother do this dozens of times… easy! Except things quickly get complicated:
THE APPLES HAVE TO BE PEELED!!
« What if the apples peeled themselves? » he wonders.
He sets some apples on the table with a peeler beside them, then waits. He waits a long time, a very long time, until he finally realizes that waiting for an apple to peel itself is like asking your socks to put themselves away in the wardrobe, all on their own, out of solidarity.
That’s the last straw. Raoul lets out a long sigh and files his pie project away in the cupboard of bad ideas.
But that doesn’t solve his problem. He still needs to find the brilliant idea, the stroke of genius that will win over his new neighbor.
